Peen

I do not think it means what you think it means.

Kelvin

Even converting from Celsius is surprisingly pesky!

badass

For some reason, I completely blanked on this word yesterday evening.  It amuses me that "Romantic fantasy:  badass" is now, in my mind at least, a distinct genre.

Tapenade

As it turns out, I prefer tomato sauce.  What a delicious mistake!

caterpillar and flexibility

A woman with the lung capacity to converse throughout a three hour rock concert deserves a better vocabulary.

Traduce

It's not clear to me how this word differs from "slander".  Sad that we have more than one word for that.

Cloacal

Yeah, I guess that could be an adjective.

I'm job hunting.  I learn something new every day -- mostly by trial and error.  Yesterday I learned that what sounds like an intake phone call when it's scheduled might be a phone interview by a panel of senior colleagues.  Today is young yet, but look at all these words:

Special added bonus:  if the interview goes well, I could become a "Marble".

Compost

I've put stuff in every other week for 10 years.  I've taken stuff out maybe 3 times.  How does that work?

Awkward

"wkw"?  Really?
mathhobbit: (Default)
park

I find it almost as surprising that we use the same word for Bailey Park and Yellowstone Park as that the verb and noun forms are related.

Equilibria

I almost wish we would standardize on "equilibriums" and "vertexes" and be done with it.  Almost.

Verisimilitude

The more I think about it, the more I'm disturbed by a word meaning "seems like it's probably true".  As a scientist, I don't want to admit that intuition is so closely linked to acceptance as fact.

Yesterday's word was Lagniappe, which doesn't have the origins I would have expected.

petrichor

Tomorrow's is, I believe, lagniappe.

I'm a little sad that "petrichor" doesn't apply in cities.

"These are the times that try men's souls.  In the course of our nation's history, the people of Boston have rallied bravely whenever the rights of men have been threatened."

Shuffle all might not be the best setting for driving -- I didn't need a guided meditation for sleep during that traffic jam -- but it does turn up some surprising old favorites!

Carburetor

Maybe I've been pronouncing it wrong my whole life?

mathhobbit: (Default)
Hypocrisy

I keep wanting to spell it "hypocracy".
mathhobbit: (Default)
nugatory

I wonder if I'll ever get over this studenting stuff.
