Spring

Having learned the lesson "always take out the kitchen compost *before* the snow storm" and having nice weather today, I went out to play in the dirt.

I've got one ambitious daffodil bulb that's already put up a 3" shoot. Crocuses are in evidence, maybe 1/2" tall. There's a mystery reddish shoot about 1 1/2" tall that's probably some variety of hard-to-kill weed. I'm going to wait and see on that one. No sign of the bleeding heart, but after struggling with the shade all summer it wasn't expected to survive.

During the disturbance in the basement over the winter (I suspected thieves, but at the worst of the shakeup we had actually *gained* two bicycles in our storage area) the building seems to have sprouted a fancy metal chimney. It's directly over the mint, which appears to be thriving. I had to move one of the brick "stepping stones" I'm using to avoid crushing things when I walk around, and I expect I'll be banging into it frequently.

It appears the plumber abandoned the box for the water heater by the trash, so I now have "sort the soggy cardboard from the trash and bundle it for recycling" on my todo list. As an added bonus, we've lost the lids to all four of our trash cans. Don't tell the city.

The compost bin contains a Christmas wreath embedded in a matrix of banana peels, perched atop a nest of dried mulberry branches. Maybe they were right when they told me not to put branches in the compost... My plan is to yank them out of the bottom and throw them back in the top whenever I feel the urge. Still no dirt at the bottom of the bin, but as long as there's still room at the top I'm not going to worry about that. If I need dirt I've got two window boxes worth that my downstairs neighbor dumped on my garden.

With the lovely weather and budding plants it seems odd to be hoping for a snow day on Monday.
