The bad news:  There's a bad spot on the trash picked monitor that renders the Windows systray unusable.  It really was trash.  Also, I still don't haven't seen a monitor failure due to extreme cold (unless the bad spot happened while the monitor was outside, which is possible.)

The good news:  My current monitor has a much clearer picture than the trash picked one ever did.  I'm pleased to remember that I chose this one carefully and, apparently, well.

The news you've all heard that I still want to relate; maybe this will get it out of my system:  Years ago, my retired engineer uncle trash picked a bread machine.  Since he lived on a boat at the time, he did not keep it but instead gave it to his brother, Shipyard Uncle.  Shipyard Uncle gave it to me about 3 years ago, and I loved it dearly.  Now I have a new bread machine, and am returning the old one whence it came.  Engineer Uncle will be driving up from the Chessapeake soon to visit (retired) Professor Uncle and his wife.  On Friday I was very brave and drove in snow to bring the breadbot to Professor Uncle.  Because I wasn't sure if the LCD display on the breadbot could cope with cold, I spent a lot of time bringing the breadbot in from the cold and back out to my car again.  I didn't have too much trouble manhandling the bulky breadbot, and I believe it will reach its destination safely.  Long live the breadbot!
