Holiday cards

mathhobbitI don't get it.
What is the point of mailing someone a picture with your name on it? I like getting them -- it's nice to know people are thinking of me -- but when I think about signing and mailing 50 cards I just can't see the point of going to such great effort to transmit so little information.
Ok, the picture actually carries a lot of information. But isn't the picture just there for decoration?
Perhaps the whole point of the exercise is to mail people pictures? Help?
