I imagine you could cook the main mixture in a crockpot, but the topping would not brown or become crunchy.

Meh. I skipped the topping anyway.

This recipe was not as successful as the chard soup. Perhaps if I doubled the butter...

Half the butter in the recipe was in the topping, and I imagine the texture contrast would be nice. <shrug>
