How important is it to boil water?

We should be allowed to brush our teeth with tap water by Wednesday morning.
A little ways down the report is some description of what's in our pipes right now. My impression is that brushing your teeth with today's tap water is much less risky than drinking from a stream while hiking.
The answer to my previous question may be "administer gin orally until you stop worrying about getting germs on your hands and plates". (Note that my only dependents are cats; drink responsibly!)
